Matthias Irmler (M.Eng.), Development Engineer and Technical Project Coordinator for the Formula 1 Season 2021 at Bosch Engineering GmbH / Motorsport
After several years in machining and assembly, making the leap back to the classroom was not easy for me at first. However, for my personal development, the degree has more than worthwhile. The Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences provided me with solid, in-depth technical knowledge, in order to be well-placed for the future profession. What I particularly liked was the fact that you can build up your own specialisation and strengthen your interests in the later Bachelor’s semesters, as well as in the Master’s.

    - Extracurricular (interfaculty) studies

The degree programme concludes with the Bachelor’s thesis, in which a project at the university or in cooperation with a company is independently planned, organised and implemented.

Main focus of studies

From the 4th semester, students select from a wide range of elective courses, thus having the opportunity to tailor their studies to their personal interests. In doing so, they are not bound by any combination of subjects. However, in order to provide guidance for suitable subject combinations, four main areas of study have been developed. If you follow one of these subject recommendations, you will also receive a certificate for that area of studies at the end of your course.

You can choose between the following main areas of study
    • Automation engineering
    • Automotive engineering
    • Product development
    • Production engineering

    Study programme laboratories

On the mechanical engineering degree course there are many laboratory classes for foundation studies, specialisations and research.

Before you start – Well prepared for your studies

    Previous knowledge?

The pre-study work placement is recommended for applicants without relevant practical experience, it is not compulsory. In the pre-study work placement applicants should familiarise themselves with the manual work techniques of the respective field of study. The pre-study work placement is intended to familiarise applicants with the industrial working environment.

The pre-study placement is designed to provide basic knowledge in the following work processes: Scribing, sawing, filing, cutting, folding, bending, flanging, straightening, drilling, thread forming, soldering, gluing, measuring and testing. It is also advantageous to acquire knowledge of materials and the basics of technical drawing.

    Another offer

In addition, we refer to the offer on the page up2study.de, which offers further opportunities to prepare for the degree course.

The Mathematics Learning Centre in Room F120 is an open question time where problems in mathematics or other technical subjects can be discussed with tutors. Practice material and reference literature is available. It offers support with questions about the electronic mathematics basics test (MGT), homework, exam preparation, etc.

The Learning Centre is manned by tutors Mon-Thu from 13.00–15.00 and until 17.00 on long Wednesdays. Just drop in!

    E-Learning

Right at the beginning of the first semester, many degree programmes use a test to check basic mathematics skills. Any deficits can then be systematically and individually worked through in an adaptive mathematics learning system (https://de.bettermarks.com/).
