After several years in machining and assembly, making the leap back to the classroom was not easy for me at first. However, for my personal development, the degree has more than worthwhile. The Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences provided me with solid, in-depth technical knowledge, in order to be well-placed for the future profession. What I particularly liked was the fact that you can build up your own specialisation and strengthen your interests in the later Bachelor’s semesters, as well as in the Master’s.

Career prospects

The demand for mechanical engineers and qualified graduates continues to grow. And that means jobs with a secure future!

Mechanical engineers are in demand particularly in the automotive, aerospace and machine tools industries. They can be found both in small, medium and large companies. The planning, development, design, maintenance and distribution of machinery and equipment in almost all branches of industry result in very multifaceted fields of activity.

Programme Structure

Basic Study (in English)

  • Mathematics
  • Physics with lab

A compulsory German language course is also part of the programme.

Main Study (in German)

In the main course, the fundamentals are expanded and a broad range of subject-specific knowledge is taught. The lectures are supplemented by practical exercises in the laboratories.

  • Specialist and technical electives (lectures and laboratories)
  • Mathematics and Natural Sciences Specialisation
  • Materials Laboratory
    - Engineering Mechanics
    - Vibrations
    - Machine Dynamics
  • Thermo- and Fluid Dynamics
    - Thermodynamics
    - Fluid Mechanics
  • Metrology and Control Engineering
    - Signals and Systems

  • Design Theory
  • CAD and Manufacturing
    - Designing with CAD
    - Machining and Ablative Manufacturing Processes
    - Forming Processes in Manufacturing
  • Interdisciplinary Qualification
    - Extracurricular (interfaculty) studies

The newly acquired knowledge and skills are then applied in the internship, in which students work independently in an industrial company on real tasks from everyday engineering life.

  • Practical experience in an industrial company
  • Real tasks from everyday engineering life
  • Independent working
  • Engineering conditions
  • Contact with experienced engineers
  • Paid internship
  • Option of foreign placement

In the advanced studies programme you have considerable freedom to choose your areas of focus, based on your experience from the practical semester. In addition, you can attend various lectures from other courses in the faculty. Of course, content on management and soft skills is not left out.

  • Specialist and technical electives (lectures and laboratories)
  • Seminar work / Project
    - Project Planning
    - ME Colloquium
  • Advanced principles
    - Fluid Engineering
  • Interdisciplinary Qualification
    - Rhetoric
    - Law for Engineers
    - Introduction to Business Administration
    - Extracurricular (interfaculty) studies

The degree programme concludes with the Bachelor’s thesis, in which a project at the university or in cooperation with a company is independently planned, organised and implemented.

Main focus of studies

From the 4th semester, students select from a wide range of elective courses, thus having the opportunity to tailor their studies to their personal interests. In doing so, they are not bound by any combination of subjects. However, in order to provide guidance for suitable subject combinations, four main areas of study have been developed. If you follow one of these subject recommendations, you will also receive a certificate for that area of studies at the end of your course.

You can choose between the following main areas of study
    • Automation engineering
    • Automotive engineering
    • Product development
    • Production engineering
