The National University of La Plata, founded in 1905 by Dr. Joaquín Víctor González, arose from the confluence of two fundamental concepts. On the one hand, the traditional interpretation of the term "University" as the natural sphere of knowledge. On the other hand, the updated idea of scientific knowledge based on experimental, social and artistic knowledge in its different expressions. With more than a century of experience, it continues to be a pioneer in advanced cultural, artistic and scientific studies and developments. This has given it the prestige that places it among the leading institutions in the country, the American continent and the world.
Teaching, research and extension are the basic pillars of this University. It currently has 17 Faculties, where 110 thousand undergraduate students study. In recent years, an average enrollment of around 23,000 applicants has been recorded, of which 18,500 actually enter. About 6,000 students graduate from its classrooms every year.
The academic offer of the UNLP includes 111 undergraduate courses -157 degrees- and 170 postgraduate courses (85% are accredited or in the process of being accredited by the National Commission for University Evaluation and Accreditation -CONEAU-), in addition to some 500 postgraduate courses. Between careers and courses, it receives about 22,000 graduate students. It also has 100 free professorships dependent on the Presidency, in addition to the many that operate in the Faculties. At the undergraduate level, the academic offer includes five Pre-University Colleges with an enrollment of about 5,000 students. The UNLP staff is made up of some 12,000 undergraduate and graduate teachers and 3,000 non-teaching staff.
The Presidency Building, headquarters of this university, is located in the heart of the city of La Plata, at 776 Avenida 7. The University also has 154 Research and Development Institutes, Centers and Laboratories where some 6,000 researchers work. It also has a Museum of Natural Sciences (and a network of 12 thematic museums), an Astronomical Observatory, a Planetarium, a Public Library (and a network of 21 libraries), a Publishing House, an AM-FM Radio Station, a Physical Education Institute with a Sports Field and four branches of the University Canteen, which provides about 7,000 lunches a day.
In addition, the UNLP has a university hostel located at 61 and 127, in Berisso, where 100 students from the interior of the country are currently housed, which has a medical, nutritional and psychological office. When the works that the University is carrying out on the premises are completed, the Hostel will have the capacity to accommodate more than 200 students in single rooms.
