The Bachelor of Electrical Systems Engineering degree is the basis of future key technologies, such as artificial intelligence, autonomous driving and Industry 4.0. An electronic control unit is working in practically every device of everyday life – also in communications technology and transport. Electronics includes sensors, transmission technology, power electronics, and regulation and control functions.
“The ELB-(ESE) degree was very practice-oriented, due to the many laboratory-based units such as Power Supply and Power Electronics 2, in which theoretical knowledge was further strengthened. Not that the theoretical part was neglected. Besides the main focus on power electronics and IT, there were also the interdisciplinary subjects like EMC, Control Engineering and Principles of Network Engineering. These give you a very broad-ranging course of studies. The interdisciplinary qualifications at the end of the course meant that subjects like business administration weren’t neglected either.”
Studying electronics at Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences met all my needs and satisfied my thirst for knowledge of electronics. The family atmosphere in the university enabled me to develop as a person. During the subsequent doctorate it was the professors and staff of the Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences who supported me and shaped my future career.”
“EL/ESE is a very practice-oriented course. Theory is underpinned with the appropriate practical references. I was able to apply the knowledge that I acquired during my studies in industry. In addition to the basic subjects, topics like power converters, electrical drives and electrical control drives make the course forward-looking. A special feature of the course is the everyday university life and the resulting network.”
“What convinced me about the concept of a university of applied sciences, now a university of applied sciences, were the smaller semester groups and the strongly practice-focussed education. It was here in Heilbronn that I came in contact with image processing, the subject that later decisively determined my professional career. “Here I learnt everything I needed later to start my own company.”

In the course of your studies you will learn to design and operate state-of-the-art electronic systems while studying bilingual.
The programme is oriented on future requirements for successful engineers. That includes a strong focus on “Systems Engineering” capabilities. You will learn the technical “language of engineers” (simulation, specification, etc.). Mastering this form of communication, in combination with a profound technical knowledge, leads to a successful career as an engineer especially in international teams.
During the basic studies you will learn all the necessary basics in the fields of mathematics, computer science, physics and electrical engineering. Since the first year is taught in English, you have also the opportunity to improve your German language skills with an obligatory intensive German course.
In the advanced study period, which is taught mainly in German, you have the opportunity to specialize according to your preferences and strengths. For this purpose, you can choose between specializations in the fields of power electronics and information technology. These range from microcontroller programming, digital signal and image processing, control engineering, networked systems to power converters, electrical drives and the associated circuit in technology.
You will conclude your studies with a Bachelor's thesis, which is often conducted in the strong local world-wide oriented industry.
With us you will learn in a practical way and make contacts with the industry during your studies.
While development in most of the basic technologies is rather stagnant, a strong innovative push is also expected in the future in electrical engineering and electronics. Accordingly, there are great opportunities to find a job with a secure future. Numerous opportunities are offered by manufacturers of electrical and electronic devices, the chemical industry, mechanical and plant engineering, automotive manufacturers and suppliers, IT and communications companies and last but not least, the public services. Subjects like Business Administration, Working Techniques and Project Management also qualify you for leadership roles. The newly acquired knowledge and skills are then applied in the practical semester, in which students work independently in an industrial company on real tasks from everyday engineering life.
In the advanced studies programme you have considerable freedom to choose your areas of focus, based on your experience from the practical semester. In addition, you can attend various lectures from other courses in the faculty. Of course, content on management and soft skills is also included.
Master's program: The completion of your bachelor's degree allows you to start your career or, alternatively, to continue your studies in our master's program.
Doctorate: Upon completion of your Master's degree, you will also have the opportunity to pursue a doctorate within the framework of university cooperations.
