BAföG-Consultation

Each and every person in Germany is supposed to be able to take up a study programme they are interested in – no matter their financial background. BAföG can be key to this freedom. The abbreviation stands for "Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz" which is the German Federal Training Assistance Act for students. The act regulates how the government funds students' training and studies in Germany.

The act says (§ 1 BAföG):

„Students shall have a legal entitlement to individual educational assistance for training that is in line with their aptitude, suitability and performance in accordance with the provisions of this act if the student does not otherwise have the means necessary for their livelihood and training.“

Under certain conditions, students are entitled to BAföG from the month in which lectures begin. From the winter semester 2024/25, new BAföG rates will apply, and first-semester students from families with little money can also receive a one-off study grant of 1000 euros. All information can be found here.

In order to secure your BAföG entitlement, it is necessary to submit the application for educational support to the Studierendenwerk Heidelberg as early as possible, initially as a short application here to meet the deadline.

BAföG applications are available at the Student Service Office or online at https://www.bafoeg-digital.de or here. A checklist of the documents to be submitted for your application can be found at Checklist-Inlandsantrag.pdf or Checklist-Auslandsantrag.pdf

Please note: After the fourth semester, proof of performance must be submitted to the Office for Educational Support (Studierendenwerk Heidelberg) in order to continue receiving BAföG. To do this, it is sufficient to attach your certificate of examination results with proof of the ECTS points earned to the application. You can find out how many points you need to have achieved for your application to be valid at the Student Service Office.

Please note the current BAföG approval period when you start your practical semester. Make sure you have a consultation with your BAföG advisor.

If you have any questions or concerns about BAföG, please use the BAföG hotline of the Heidelberg Student Union: Tel: 06221 54-5404 (on Tuesday and Thursday: 10.00 - 16.00)

Or use the virtual counselling appointments at BAföG-Heilbronn.
