Professor Dr. Fittinghoff studied mechanical engineering at TU Dortmund University with a focus on material flow and logistics. He then worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Materials Handling and Warehousing at TU Dortmund University and in 2001 he received his doctorate summa cum laude on the subject of "Performance analysis of parking systems".

From 2001 to 2004, Prof. Dr. Fittinghoff initially worked as a project engineer and later as a member of the management team at AVIPO GmbH, Magdeburg. From 2004 to 2011, he taught at the SRH University of Applied Sciences for Logistics and Business, Hamm, in the field of technical logistics and organized the teaching area there.

In September 2011, Prof. Fittinghoff was appointed to the Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences, where he holds the professorship for Material Flow and Logistics Planning and represents intralogistics. His teaching and research activities focus on the simulation of logistics systems, warehouse management systems, the planning of material flow processes and the dimensioning of appropriate conveying and storage equipment, in particular order picking systems and automated block storage systems. 
He has been involved in the university's committees by participating in the Information and Media Committee (2014 to 2019) and the Senate (2019 to 2023), various appointment committees and the further development of degree programs. 
A research semester is currently planned for the summer semester of 2025.
