The ROGER Principle: First aid for the initial consultation

Below you will find advice: How do I approach those affected, how do I talk about it and how can I provide competent first aid? The Roger principle can be helpful here.

R - React

  • Approach the person and assess what they need from you.
  • Stay by the person's side and respect the confidentiality of the conversation.

O - Open and unbiased listening and communication

  • Really listen with the aim of understanding the person.
  • Never make accusations (e.g. "Why are you only coming now?").

G - Give support and information

  • Respond sensitively and convey confidence.
  • Emotional support.
  • Offer information.

E - Encourage them to seek help

  • Find out what contact points and support are available.
  • Arrange for the person to get help.

R - Reactivate resources

  • Praise and appreciation for the courage, the confidence shown and the resources identified during the conversation.
  • Encouragement to use self-help strategies and to seek support from contacts in the personal environment.
